Flood Control

Canal flood structure

The canal system in South Florida

The canal system in South Florida plays a vital role in flood control by managing excess water during heavy rainfall and storm events. Designed to prevent widespread flooding in low-lying areas, the canals help redirect water from urban areas to bodies of water such as Lake Clarke, and then to larger bodies of water or the ocean. Water management districts operate pump stations and gates along the canals, regulating water levels. This system allows for the controlled release of water, reducing pressure on natural drainage systems, protecting property, and maintaining the balance between water supply and flood prevention in a region prone to hurricanes and storms.

In Lake Clarke Shores, this system is managed by the Lake Worth Drainage District.
